Day 6
Lee to Woolacombe Ascent 2,037 feet Cumulative 12,063 feet
Woolacombe to Croyde Bay Ascent 725 feet Cumulative 12,788 feet
There were problems this morning:
i) a route description of ‘strenuous then easy’ should,
in my opinion, have been 98% strenuous and 2% easy.
ii) At Bull Point I looked doubtfully at the path which seemed to drop vertically down the steep cliff side and then vanish from sight. So I asked a group, who were admiring the view of grey sky and grey sea masked by swirling grey sea mist, if the disappearing path were the coastal path.’ Yes’ said this man, but you can’t walk far along it. There’s been a land slip. It’s impassable. The path’s closed. You’ll have to walk to Mortehoe along that path. ‘But my husband will be waiting for me on the coastal path near Woolacomb’ I replied, horrified.` And Mortihoe is miles away inland.` Well, I’ve told you what I think you should do’ the man replied.
So I ignored him and walked gingerly down the coastal path. I didn’t find any land slippage, but I did find John and Maisy patiently waiting for me at Woolacomb.
iii) I saw a leaping dolphin!
Except it turned out to be a rock. Just my luck.
Fortunately the afternoon walk was pleasant as I strolled through the sand dunes and later enjoyed the view from Baggy Point because the late sun had finally sent the sea mist and grey sky packing.
And I was able to enjoy the last stages of my walk with John and Maisy.
What more could I have asked for?
